What is Therapeutic Recreation and how can it help individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, stress or substance abuse?

The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) defines Recreation Therapy as a treatment service designed to “restore, remediate, and rehabilitate, a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness, as well as reduce or eliminate the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations caused by an illness or disabling condition”. These services are delivered by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) who are credentialed by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists

At New Legends, we view Therapeutic Recreation as far more than a treatment for people with disabilities. We believe that recreation and an active participation in life are the keys to positive mental health. For this reason, our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists are available to help incorporate leisure, fun, and exercise into your day to day living. Therapeutic Recreation can also benefit those who are trying to change an unproductive habit or learn how to better handle the stress in their lives.

Our nationally Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) are here to help you build, or in some instances, re-build, a life geared toward living proactively. We will conduct an assessment of your current leisure lifestyle and talk with you about what activities you might be interested in trying in the future.

What Does a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Do?

Our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) can help you to build a healthy leisure lifestyle. After assessing your current leisure lifestyle using the “Vitality Through Leisure Assessment” (VTL), you and your CTRS will develop a plan of action for change. You can expect that your coach will encourage, guide and motivate you as you begin to engage in new activities and develop new interests.

An individual who is qualified as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, (CTRS), is certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). CTRS’s can specialize in Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Developmental Disabilities, Community Inclusion Services, or Behavioral Health, including addictions.

Please contact Kevin Cox, MS, MS Ed., CTRS, Director of Leisure Services, at 630-828-6304 for more information about how New Legends can assist you in developing and maintaining a healthy leisure lifestyle.
